"PAPER TIGERS" THE CHAMELEONS (1983)

I started Mental Jukebox nearly three years ago at the beginning of the pandemic. During this time, I’ve discovered new music, rediscovered old favorites and I’ve met passionate music fans around the world. And when things opened up, I kept on blogging. This month, the jukebox goes deeper. The term “deep cut” has multiple meanings. It can refer to lesser known album tracks from well-known artists. It can also refer to tracks from lesser known artists. This month, I’ll be featuring both types. #DeepCutsFeb

The Chameleons enjoyed a bit of a cult status back in the eighties. It wasn’t until several decades later, in the early 2000’s, that the band’s undeniable influence became fully apparent. Now, it’s hard to imagine that some of the post-punk revival acts from that era could exist without The Chameleons. Of course, the two bands that stand out the most are the Editors and Interpol. The angular guitar playing, driving bass lines, atmospheric soundscapes and ominous vocals became a blueprint from which a new generation could build off. Script of the Bridge is required listening for any post punk music fan. And the listener must push past “Don’t Fall”, “Second Skin”, and “Up the Down Escalator” and hear the album in its entirety. The deep cuts, like “Paper Tigers” are just as good as the more well-known tracks.

“Paper Tigers” is a rollicky ride, a banger of a track where every instrument becomes a rhythmic element. I hear a little Interpol here with the foreshadowing of Daniel Kessler’s chiming guitar explorations. I sense a little Editors going on as well a la Tom Smith. The Chameleons were around creating these superb sonic landscapes twenty years before these great post-punk revival bands made their appearance. “Paper Tigers” is proof of the sheer depth of this pioneer’s catalog. When it came to the impact on future acts, the deep cuts from The Chameleons often cut the deepest.

"SECOND SKIN" THE CHAMELEONS (1983)

It’s time to get back to my favorite decade. For the month of March, I’ll be looking back at some of my favorite jams from the 80s. These songs often came to me via MTV or the radio. NYC-area stations WDRE, WPLJ, WNEW, K-ROCK and Z100 introduced me to everything from irresistible pop confections to under-the-radar post-punk anthems. I would not be who I am today if it weren’t for the 80s. It was the decade when I discovered music can be a truly powerful thing. #31DaysOf80sSongs

I consider myself pretty well versed in the music of the 80’s. It’s the decade when I discovered my love for music, which can get a little extreme at times. That said, it’s a little humbling and slightly embarrassing that I never even heard of The Chameleons until I came across Interpol in the early 2000s. Interpol didn’t define post punk, but they were the kings of it in the post-9/11 era. So when I heard a little known band called The Chameleons helped influence their direction, I knew I had to review their catalog, starting with the well respected Script of the Bridge and the track that batted cleanup: “Second Skin”.

If albums like Turn On The Bright Lights and Antics can blow my mind in the early 2000s, then that makes songs like “Second Skin” that much more impressive as a song twenty years before these Interpol classics. Here, The Chameleons didn’t try to sound like Joy Division. They carved out their own signature post punk sound out of the ether. The guitars on “Second Skin” soar with ecstasy and then crash down in misery. The drums pound away like nails in a coffin. Mark Burgess, all the while, sings the refrain in the chorus like a man possessed. “Second Skin” crawls under your skin and then once it gets in there, it simply refuses to climb back out.

Much like Kate Bush, The Chameleons were a musical harbinger. Paving the way for sounds that would become more popularized decades later. Important bands like Interpol and The Editors may not have ever surfaced if we didn’t have The Chameleons laying down the post-punk foundation in the 80’s. “Second Skin” is a foreshadowing of the grating guitar style of Daniel Kessler and the ominous vocal delivery of Paul Banks and Tom Smith.
